Simon VBK - Architect & Owner

Simon VBK (Volker Braun-Kolbe), principal of VBK Architecture, is a licensed architect registered in New York and Massachusetts, and certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB).

Simon has extensive architectural experience across diverse project types, from large-scale K-12 educational facilities to intimate residential work. After earning a Master of Arts in Philosophy, Physics/Astronomy, and History of Religion from the University of Würzburg, Germany (2002), he completed his Master of Architecture at the University at Buffalo (2007), receiving The AIA School Medal and The Certificate of Merit for outstanding academic achievement. That same year, he published his work in design theory, Ontic Space.

At Cannon Design, Simon contributed to numerous educational projects, from renovations in the Clarence School District to large-scale developments including the Ave Maria University campus in Florida. Licensed in Massachusetts in 2009, he worked independently as a design consultant, focusing on residential projects and delivering unique, modern solutions to renovation and remodeling challenges.

Before founding VBK Architecture, Simon worked with Tommaso Briatico Architects, bringing design expertise and commitment to high-quality solutions while gaining experience in commercial projects, permit processes, and diverse residential work.

Simon has distinguished himself in architectural competitions, earning third place in the Fifth Annual National Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute Architectural Design Competition and first place in the Pella Competition Scholarship Program (both 2006). In 2009, he co-organized and served as jury member for the McKinley House Design Competition (AIA Buffalo/WNY), and in 2010 served as jury member for the West Virginia AIA Design Awards.

The book Ontic Space – An Ontological Approach to Architecture and Design, originally published in 2007 under the pen name Simon Faber, was re-published in 2012 and is available on Amazon:
